Professor Lovorka Grgurević – HAZU award winner

The ceremony held at Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (Hrvatska akademija znanosti i umjetnosti – HAZU) on 29th April 2016, presented the HAZU awards for exceptional scientific and art achievements in Republic of Croatia for 2015.

In the Department of Medical Sciences the award was presented to prof. Lovorka Grgurević from the University of Zagreb School of Medicine, for the scientific contribution of exceptional importance (Grgurević L. et al. Journal of American Society of Nephrology 22 : 681-692, 2011), the discovery of BMP1 enzyme in patients with cronic kidney disease which induces the creation of fibrotic tissue and accelerates the loss of kidney function. This finding features BMP1 as a new target molecule for developing the drug against creation of fibrotic tissue in chronic human diseases.
